Q & A

When designing a room, what are your three favorite categories of fabrics currently in our showroom?

There’s something about beautiful soft quality of the Scalamandre velvets that makes a space feel instantly elevated to me. These lush velvets blend and contrast well with the textures of interestingly woven fabrics, especially when layered with lots of variety. I also love prints – especially in fun or unexpected colors.

Are you more pattern or plain in your design selections?

Oh, definitely some pattern, but I think a balance of both is key! I love a room to feel alive and layered. Creating an atmosphere of warmth — the conversation between pattern and solid is where the magic happens.

What are your three favorite colors at the moment that you seem to be designing more with?

It’s so hard to choose, but lately I’ve been loving inky blue (moody and ridiculously versatile) soft-off pinks (dusty rose with a bit of attitude) and deep aubergine (sophisticated and surprisingly grounding). Also, I’ve always loved gold and a little metallic here and there!

What are the three categories of wallpaper that you are drawn to the most?

I’m especially drawn to scenic murals that create an instant atmosphere and history to a space, and allow for the personality of the homeowner to really shine. I also love textured rich grasscloths, they can feel tailored and bring depth and warmth to a room. Using very delicate patterns can also add a softness, charm and femininity to a space, especially with complimentary fabrics.

Who is your favorite pet from all the projects you have worked on? How have you somehow incorporated this pet into your design?

How have you somehow incorporated this pet into your design? Without question, our favorite dog is an adorable Westie with a big personality. She often accompanies her mom into the office, where she can be found perched on her throne-like blue Tigre dog bed - and if you think that bed matches the pillows on the couch, you’d be right.

Can you share an anecdote that symbolizes a day in your life?

On walking into my new studio by the Flatiron today, we had a variety of projects laid out for review at all varying stages of design development. We are working on homes of clients that have become old friends whom I’ve collaborated with for years, whose children we made playrooms for and are now off to college. Alongside renovations for new clients, and new horizons coming into focus. Seeing them side by side - none of the homes look remotely like one another, each with their own style, uniqueness, and creativity. The homes are intimate portraits of those that inhabit them. At that moment, I felt incredibly lucky that I get to be a part of so many peoples lives and their homes and I get to do this very creative and meaningful work every day.

We are grateful to Katie Lydon for inviting us into her creative world.
