What is Light Fastness?
It’s a common misunderstanding that the hours rating of each indoor/outdoor fabric is an indication of how long it takes for a fabric to fade when exposed to the natural sun. In actuality, the rating indicates how many hours of accelerated ultraviolet / weather exposure the fabric received under a standardized test. This test uses an accelerated weathering system machine (weather-o-meter), which exposes the fabric to a very high intensity of light with all spectrum UV, in addition to water and changes in temperature and humidity. The rating on the fabric indicates that it withstood that many hours of such testing without any significant fading.
What is the Blue Wool Scale??
The Blue Wool Light Fastness Scale was developed for the textile industry. The European version is part of the ISO standards, and it gets its name from the dyed blue wool fabric bands or swatches that are used to visually compare fading rates. Much like a litmus test, Blue Wools act as a visual reference or "dosimeter" for users like museums to determine when too much light has fallen on an artwork so it can be removed from display. Blue Wools also are used as a timing device for knowing when to end a lightfastness test, although over time, they have become less important or necessary with the introduction of accurate testing instruments that can control exposure times and intensity. There are eight levels or references, with 8 being essentially permanent and 1 being fugitive.
