LOST PAVILION MURAL - PANEL 1

Chinese themes, interpreted through a European lens, ultimately influenced China to reimagine its own aesthetic in this European-fantasy style. This unique fusion is largely attributed to the painter Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1768), a Jesuit artist whose work deeply impacted the Chinese Emperor Qianlong. Castiglione’s artistic hybridization between East and West profoundly transformed the emperor, Chinese artists, courtiers, and culture, shaping what we now recognize as elements of traditional Chinese art. As an architect, painter, and missionary, Castiglione led monumental projects, including the construction and decoration of the European Palaces at the Gardens of Perfect Brightness (Yuan Ming Yuan) in Beijing, which was later destroyed by French and British troops during the Second Opium War in 1860.

In homage to Castiglione’s legacy, the Lost Pavilion Mural is as timeless as if it were painted in his era, yet remains fully contemporary. With its nuanced, tea-stained background and chinoiserie foreground, the mural shifts in character depending on the room’s furnishings, lighting, and intended mood, making it appear as though it has been there for decades—or even centuries. This mural presents an ethereal scene of a distant pagoda pavilion seemingly lost in the far-off landscape near a small village, framed by lush greenery and abundant gardens in the foreground. It captures a botanical wonderland where blooms flourish amid colorful birds, evoking an enchanting illusion of unfettered beauty.
