Pondicherry (now known as Puducherry) is a region in South India with a rich history influenced by its colonial past, particularly under French rule from the late 17th century until 1954. The region is known for its distinctive textiles, which often reflect a blend of Indian and French influences.
The Scalamandré Pondicherry features a Palampore or "Tree of Life" motif, which has it's origins in India, where the exotic designs were hand painted and mordant dyed, and exported to Europe and England for use as elaborate bed hangings and curtains.
