 - Anjali Pollack

Anjali Pollack founded her firm in 2004. Born in Bombay, India, Anjali moved to New York to study Interior Design at FIT and never left! Inspired by the melting pot culture of the two metropolis’ she calls home and constant travels with her family, her style is glamorous and global. She loves working together as part of a team and believes that the collaboration of creative, smart minds is the force behind every project. She sees her role akin to that of an interpreter- absorbing the client’s cues and translating those uniquely into each home.

A lover of the arts, she enjoys visiting museums and galleries, and watching live performance. Always looking for the next find she loves antique stores, off the beaten track places and markets all over the world. Obsessed with tabletop, accessories, flowers, and styling, she loves to entertain at home with family and friends.

Deeply committed to improving Education and Mental Health, Anjali co-founded the SCA Charitable Foundation with her husband, Michael Pollack in 2009. A die-hard New Yorker, she lives on the Upper West Side with her husband and two sons.

Anjali’s Favorites from Scalamandré

Q&A with the Designer

When designing a room, what are your three favorite categories of fabrics currently in our showroom?

Our current Scalamandré obsessions are:

  1. A botanical print in a cotton poplin such as the Central Park. We love the lightweight breathability of this fabric and this print is one that we have to stop ourselves from using over and over again.
  2. The performance velvets offered by Scalamandré are incredible. The selection is huge both in terms of sheen and also in the range of colors offered. One that we really love is the Lark Fontaine Lux fabric – it is a super glamorous velvet and literally gleams once upholstered!
  3. We are also really into soft textured fabrics. Once again, we find Scalamandré to be our go to showroom for these. One of our favorites is the Aldeco Prive Melange Velvet, it is luxuriously soft but very elevated looking.

Are you more pattern or plain in your design selections?

With fabrics we tend to be plainer for the “base” selection. The base would be the sofa, chair or a bed. We then add patterns in the “layers” such as the pillows, wallpaper, rugs etc.

What are your three favorite colors at the moment that you seem to be designing more with?

At APD blue is a perennial. Every season, every home, town, or country in some way or the other. Green seems to be the color of the moment, however. We find emeralds, hunter greens and jades to be permeating our design schemes at the moment! We are also finding a general shift away from cooler tones to warmer tones and are doing a lot more sand and oatmeal.

What are the three categories of wallpaper that you are drawn to the most?

  1. MURALS - We love murals and find them to be a beautiful addition in a foyer or a dining room. The Benjamin mural offers a wonderfully rich pattern and color selection.
  2. GEOMETRICS - We tend to gravitate towards geometric papers as they bring an almost 3-dimensional quality to a space. Currently we are loving the Forte Wood Veneer.
  3. VINYLS - Vinyl’s are fantastic in children’s rooms, hallways or basements as they are easy to keep clean and can take a beating! The Mountain Mural has an ethereal feeling and we are feeling partial to the warm neutral tones.

Who is your favorite pet from all the projects you have worked on? How have you somehow incorporated this pet into your design?

We have so many favorite pets that it is hard to choose just one. Lately, we are hanging out the most with Ginger / Ginny who is a darling cockapoo who we have known since she arrived in her home. Every couch in the home is designed with a special Ginny seat. She picks a corner pillow and burrows in to keep her eye on us and makes sure no one is slacking off. Love galore!

Can you share an anecdote that symbolizes a day in your life?

Every single day at Anjali Pollack Design is organized chaos. We showed up in Westchester bright and early one morning last week... Jobsite 1 – someone else’s carpet was delivered to us and was about to be installed wall to wall! Jobsite 2 – marble slab to be installed at the top of the primary bedroom tub cracks down the middle during delivery. We always remind ourselves – everything always works out for us! Working with the right partners and vendors one always figures it out. BUT the behind the scenes – oh boy!

“We want to give a shoutout to Erica Prendergast who has been our sales rep for as long as we have been in business. She is a treasure, incredibly responsive and helpful. Erica knows the showroom inside and out and always points us in the exact right direction! It says a lot about Scalamandré that she has stayed with them so long. We also want to mention that at a designer breakfast last year, us designers made a few suggestions with regards to product selection. Every suggestion was taken to heart and implemented! Bravo and thanks.” — Anjali
